NEW CASTLE —
At its meeting this week, the New Castle school board:
•Approved $39,528 in change orders for the Lockley project. The largest, at $16,732, is for upgrading plans from a changeable letter sign to an electronic digital sign, pending variance approval. Others are for: adding two illuminated logo signs, $7,198; adding 24 banner holders, $7,800; rerouting power for lighting to avoid rock excavation, $2,590; removing two walls in a storage area to create space for fitness equipment, $1,680; relocating roof drain pipe for the storage room at $2,612; and repairing a column at a loading dock, $231. The district will receive $2,125 credit for incorrectly sized mirrors.
•Agreed to seek proposals for a used van for the maintenance department at a maximum cost of $18,900.
•Named Lisa Beshero as substitute reading and math tutor at the Harry W. Lockley Kindergarten Center, effective Oct. 28, at a $15 per hour for seven hours per day.
•Granted family/medical leave to Jenine DeSalvo, a George Washington Intermediate Elementary School learning support instructor, for March 31 through April 11.
•Granted family/medical leave to Kelly Gibson, junior/senior high personal care assistant, for Dec. 19 through Jan. 17.
•Agreed to seek bids for a new voicemail system for the junior/senior high.
•Presented Pride and Promise awards to Barb Conway, a a 50-year PTO member in the district who has been collecting box tops to raise funds for students for education; and Brian Rice of Boardman, a New Castle graduate who plays basketball at Geneva College, who helps students. Rice also was named seventh-grade boys basketball coach for this school year.
•Approved Roxanne Data as a substitute cafeteria worker and Data and Tami Smith as substitute personal care workers.
•Added the following to the teacher substitute list: Laura Ferruchie of Ellwood City and Lashion Pickney of Union Township, elementary; Stefanie Shank of Lower Burrell, elementary and Spanish; Beryl Joy Cookson of New Castle, Steven Edwards of Farrell, Barbara Hertel of Pittsburgh, Mary Jane Hudak-Start of New Castle, Chelsea Litman of Hermitage, Derek Morrow of New Castle, Kara Rubaker of Pulaski and Andre Wehner of New Wilmington, Intermediate Unit emergency.
•Added Kara Rubaker and Somer Stevens of New Castle to the substitute nurse list.
•Granted use of the high school auditorium to Par for the Cure for its annual fundraising program April 12.
•Gave permission to the girls and boys basketball boosters to use the field house concession stand for the 2013-14 basketball season.
•Approved revisions to school district policies.
