School employee suspended over drug policy

NEW CASTLE — The New Castle school board this week suspended an employee and continued hearings for two students facing expulsion.

Paperwork stated the hearing, conducted March 20, revealed the employee had violated the district’s drug and alcohol policy, which prohibits possession, use or being under the influence of a controlled substance during work hours and on school grounds. The employee is suspended and required to satisfactorily complete a drug/alcohol rehabilitation program.

The board also:

•Approved change orders totaling $27,511 for the Lockley Early Learning Center project.

•Announced the Pennsylvania Department of Education has accepted the district’s refunding of the junior-senior high school project.

•Added Jamie DeMasse to the list of approved homebound instructors for the current school year, added Diane Berkebile as a substitute cafeteria worker and Jodie Kaszowski as a substitute personal care assistant.

•Granted family/medical leaves to Barbara Norco and Veronica Wharry.

•Accepted the retirement of James McFarland, learning support instructor at the junior-senior high school, effective June 7.
