Board OKs cell tower lease pact

NEW CASTLE — At its meeting this week, the New Castle Area School Board:

•Approved a lease agreement with Verizon Wireless to post a cell tower on top of George Washington Intermediate School. The company will pay the district $18,000 this year and the payment will increase by 2 percent each year thereafter for 30 years.

•Hired Darrell Holmes as security guard at the junior/senior high school for the rest of the school year at $13 per hour, seven hours per day.

•Hired Jonathon Lucas as a reading and math tutor for homebound instruction.

•Hired Rudy Spielvogel as a cafeteria driver, as of Tuesday.

•Named Erica Fornataro as ticket manager for this year.

•Granted leaves of absence to Donna Campbell, junior/senior high school teacher; Constance Graham, business office/print room secretary; Susan Jordan, junior/senior high personal care assistant; and Marietta Mazzarini, junior/senior high cafeteria employee.

•Approved Devan Zanaglio of Slippery Rock as a substitute English teacher.

•Approved several change orders for the Lockley Early Learning Center construction, which results in a credit of  $1,035.50 to the district.

•Accepted the resignation of Sam Flora as co-athletic trainer, effective June 30.

•Approved Feb. 18 as a Hurricane Tuesday make up day.

•Created the position of junior high activities director for the 2013-14 school year on a volunteer basis for the rest of this year.

•Granted permission to the junior/senior high school band, flag line and choir to travel to New York City May 29 through 31.

•Gave permission to the New Castle Youth Football Organization to use the George Washington Intermediate School cafeteria from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12 for its 2013 season youth football banquet.

•Granted permission for the New Castle Baseball program to use the auxiliary gym on Sundays in February and March for a skills camp for elementary students.

•Gave permission to the North Hill Neighborhood Watch Group to use the high school auditorium March 19 and May 19 for its meetings.
