NEW CASTLE —  The New Castle Area School District will go before the city’s zoning hearing board next week.

The district is seeking a variance to install a permanent 3-by-8 digital message sign in front of the new Lockley Early Learning Center on Scott Street.

The board will conduct the hearing at 6 p.m. Jan. 28 at city hall.

Late last year as the building neared completion, the school board agreed with Superintendent John J. Sarandrea’s suggestion to purchase the digital sign at a cost of $16,732. The regular school sign planned for that location cost $1,000.

The message center will allow the district to continually post news and events at the school. The sign has been ordered, and its placement is pending city approval.

The district also is buying two illuminated signs that will be secured to the building. The purchase will cost $9,398, which includes the electrical work.

According to district business manager Joseph Ambrosini, the variance hearing is to consider all three signs.
