Board affirms Sarandrea’s contract

NEW CASTLE — At its meeting July 10, the New Castle school board:

•Formally approved a contract with new superintendent John Sarandrea, effective July 1 through June 30, 2018.

•Approved a roofing services and material proposal to replace the third-floor roof at George Washington Intermediate School at a cost of $344,088.

•Approved a one-year Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield health plan coverage agreement. The cost per contract is $38.33 per month with abut 350 contracts, for a total of $13,415. The amount represents a decrease from $45.68 per contract from last year.

•Approved change orders for the Harry W. Lockley Early Learning Center project totaling $17,463.

•Abolished the custodial positions of afternoon turn at the Croton pre-kindergarten center and afternoon turn custodian at Harry W. Lockley kindergarten. The board created the position of afternoon turn custodian for both schools, effective immediately.

•Approved the court adjudications of two students expelled for possession of marijuana. The two students were expelled for 45 days.

•Granted permission to the football squad to travel with chaperones and coaches to Hoover, Ala., this week to participate in the National 7 on 7 Championships. The district has 20 students attending and the group raised its own money for the cost of the trip, according to the administration.

•Granted permission for New Castle Youth Ministries to use the junior-senior high school auditorium Sept. 25 and April 23 to conduct their One-Night events.
