New Castle board asked to allow wrestling program

NEW CASTLE — The New Castle School Board heard a program on the benefits of a wrestling program.

Kevin Carmichael, who coaches in the Laurel wrestling program, and Paul Rosta asked permission to use school facilities to start a program.

They asked for gym time — preferably at centrally located George Washington Intermediate Elementary School — two to three times a week for one and a half to two hours per session on weeknights or weekends.

The program, Rosta said, would be provided at no cost to the district. He said the club would pay for insurance, costs and damages and could even conduct a fundraiser to purchase a 42-inch-square mat, the only piece of equipment needed.

The program would be open to boys and girls from kindergarten through grade 12 and accept participants from the area, not just the New Castle school district.

Rosta said 10 to 15 city residents participate in the Laurel wrestling program because New Castle does not offer one.

“We want to bring this sport back to New Castle,” Rosta said. “To do so, we must start a feeder program.”

He said districts that have wrestling start participation at the kindergarten level.

In addition to being good exercise, the men said, the sport enables participants to develop mental and physical strength and teaches self discipline. Participants also excel at other sports including football, track and field, and basketball, Rosta added.

Carmichael, who has coached at Laurel for six years, said the program is supported through fundraisers and fees paid by parents.

He noted the program has much to offer.

“Kids of any size can participate in a sport, it keeps them engaged, and there is nothing else like it.”

Carmichael added that in the six years he has coached, only one participant was ever deemed ineligible to participate in the extracurricular activity.

Stanley Magusiak, interim superintendent, told the men to fill out the form required for use of facilities. He said it will be reviewed and voted on at a future meeting.

Do you talk to yourself when you're alone?

Yes, but I’m basically just thinking out loud.
No, that would be weird.
I don’t know. Next time I’m alone, I’ll ask.
