The New Castle school board may be hiring an interim superintendent.
Discussions and a consensus about that appointment reportedly took place in an executive session after Monday’s public meeting. The appointment could be made at Wednesday’s meeting.
One board member, who asked not to be identified, said the members’ general agreement in the executive session was 5 to 4 to name Stanley Magusiak to the interim post.
Magusiak is the district’s assistant to the superintendent in charge of federal programs and technology. His current salary is $118,078.
During the private session, additional compensation for the interim post was not discussed, nor was there discussion about him returning to his assistant position once a superintendent is hired, according to the board member.
Magusiak was not present in the executive session.
There were heated discussions in the closed meeting, the board member said, and superintendent George Gabriel’s name was brought up as a possible candidate for the interim post. However, he did not have the support of the majority of the board.
In November, Gabriel gave his retirement notice, effective Jan. 31, during heated arguments with board members about proceeding with the Lockley Early Learning Center project.
The board member also noted that while in the closed session, the group continued its discussion about selecting the Pennsylvania School Boards Association or the Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV as the agency to help with the superintendent search.
The PSBA proposal could cost as much as $15,000, while the IU will conduct the search at no charge.
That discussion, begun during the public meeting, does not pertain to specific personnel and is not considered an executive session matter under the parameters of the Pennsylvania Sunshine Act.
