New Castle school board highlights

NEW CASTLE — At its May 15 meeting, the New Castle school board:

•Approved medical insurance for employees and retirees through the Midwestern Health Combined and Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield for the 2013-14 school year, at a cost of $4.7 million.

•Approved dental insurance for employees with United Concordia for 2013-14, at a premium of $260,000.

•Approved district vision insurance with Vision Benefits of America for 2013-14, at a premium of $23,000.

•Approved Life Insurance for 2013-14 with Boston Mutual Life Insurance Co. for 2013-14, at a cost of $25,500.

•Approved compensation for the district’s psychologists at $30 per hour each.

•Reappointed Jack Camerot as the board treasurer at $5,570 for the 2013-14 year, and set his bond at $100,000.

•Agreed to secure bonds for the secretary, treasurer and business manager at a total cost of $1,007.50.

•Entered an agreement with the Pennsylvania Department of Education to provide the 2013 Summer Lunch Program. The program will run from June 11 through Aug. 16 and the district will be reimbursed for the cost. Richard Sankey was hired as food service director for the program at $12 an hour for six hours a day.

•Hired Rudy Spielvogel and Susan Krueger as food service employees for the summer lunch program at $7.25 per hour. Krueger also was hired for food preparation for the Y Day Care Program.

•Granted family leave to Lockley kindergarten cafeteria worker Patricia Barber, effective April 23.

•Granted family leave to Julene Ippolito, a George Washington Intermediate School teacher, as of April 15.

•Agreed to continue the employment of Alexis Maciarello as a substitute reading/math teacher at the Harry W. Lockley Kindergarten Center for the rest of the year.

•Agreed to terminate Margie Cioffi as a paraprofessional employee for cause. The action was a recommendation of the district administration.

•Accepted the resignation of Jennifer Hoffman as seventh- and eighth-grade cheerleading coach, effective April 23.

•Added these names to the substitute list: Tammy Saad, elementary and early childhood; Dorothy Boggio of New Wilmington, Intermediate Unit IV emergency teacher; Diane Berkebile, secretary.

•Gave the football boosters permission to use Taggart Stadium June 1 for a countywide youth football camp.

•Granted use of the high school auxiliary gymnasium for a summer volleyball league, from to 5 to 9 p.m. June 12, 19 and 26 and July 1 and 10.

•Granted use of the junior/senior high field house lobby to Central Blood Bank for a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 10.

•Granted permission to the New Castle Band Boosters to use Taggart Stadium for its annual pie festival, 4 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 28.
