Basketball team receives commendation

NEW CASTLE — New Castle Mayor Anthony Mastrangelo and city council presented a commendation to the New Castle high school basketball team.

The commendation, presented at council’s work session Tuesday, notes the team has won back to back titles in both the WPIAL and Section 3 with a 52-0 record, and finished the 2012-13 season with 54 consecutive wins in the WPIAL.

The commendation says “the team’s accomplishments and victories are proof of the team members’ great characters and a testament of hard work and integrity, not only on the court, but academically, having a 3.31 grade point average.”

Team members, head coach Ralph Blundo, assistant coaches and parents attended the meeting.

Council members individually praised the young men for their accomplishments, both on and off the court, and said they serve as role models for other youngsters, adding they were inspiring and provided excitement to the community.

“We appreciate you having this,” Blundo said, adding everything he has asked of his players they have done, plus “the way they represented the community.”

“I can’t tell you what that means to me. I foresee great things from all these guys.”
