NEW CASTLE — New Castle City Council hired seven part-time police officers Wednesday night.

The new officers, who were immediately sworn in, are Randall Cook, Justin George, Mark Lewis, Bryan Lombardo, Nathaniel Miller, Paul Wallace and Aaron Womer.

Six of the officers will be stationed at city schools as a security measure in response to the shooting deaths at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., last month.

Council members and Mayor Anthony Mastrangelo congratulated the officers and wished them good luck.

Chief Bobby Salem said the officers will undergo two to three months of training. In the meantime, officers already on duty are staffing the schools, he said.

The part-time police will be paid $13 per hour with no benefits.

The New Castle Area School District will pay most of the cost. The city anticipates its cost to be minimal because the additional officers are expected to reduce overtime.

Council had planned to hire eight officers last night, but one person withdrew. Salem said because there are no more eligible candidates on the city’s civil service list, a test will be given next month to create a new list.
