NEW CASTLE —
The New Castle Area School Board made various policy and personnel changes this month. The board:
•Appointed Kara Reider as a full-time substitute for third grade at Thaddeus Stevens.
•Appointed Arne Lovlie as a full-time substitute for the first semester in life skills at John F. Kennedy Primary Center.
•Hired Justin Lamb as a junior/senior high behavioral intervention aide for this school year.
•Named Susan Jordan and Anita Renner as personal care assistants.
•Hired Alexis Maciarello as a substitute reading/math tutor at Harry W. Lockley Kindergarten Center at a pay of $15 per hour, for seven days a week.
•Approved a contract with Jack McCullough as speech therapist for the district for $50 per hour, 6 1/2 hours per day, from Aug. 22 through Jan. 29, for a total estimated cost of $29,000. McCullough is a retired speech therapist and works for the Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV.
•Agreed to establish four reading/math literacy lab attendant positions at the John F. Kennedy, Thaddeus Stevens and West Side primary centers for the school year at $10 per hour, for up to five hours per day.
•Hired as reading/math literacy lab attendants Roxanne Gunn of Union Township at Kennedy and Jennifer Kraner at Thaddeus Stevens.
•Established the position of school security guards at George Washington Intermediate School and at the junior/senior high school for this school year at $8.50 per hour, seven hours per day, 180 days per year. Anthony Biangone will be assigned to George Washington and Patsy Nerti will be at the junior-senior high school
•Granted a 12-week leave of absence to Frank Iervoline, custodian, under the family and medical leave act, beginning Sept. 11.
•Accepted the resignation of Gerald Guido, behavioral intervention aide.
•Added Stephanie Ruozzo of New Castle to the substitute teacher list.
•Added Margaret Murphy and Laura Stoner to the cafeteria substitute list.
•Added Anita Cialella, Joanne Delaney, Brandi Ford, Jacqueline Joseph and Laura Stoner to the substitute personal care list. Delaney also was added to the substitute secretary list.
•Agreed to partner with the New Castle Community YMCA to provide swimming instruction to all second-graders this school year, as a Fit4Life grant expense.
•Approved a contract with St. Vitus School for the district to provide lunches there at a cost of $1.95 per lunch for this school year.
•Revised the district transportation policy to stipulate that chartered buses may be used to transport students for school-related activities that are beyond a one-way distance of 75 miles. The policy also provides that a chartered bus may be used for any district final event more than 25 miles one way, and any inter-district event more than 25 miles one way if travel is reimbursed to the district by hosting parties.
•Changed the district’s public complaint policy, specifying that if a superintendent’s conduct is at issue, the complaint will be referred to the board president for review by the school board. Neither the board nor the administration will address anonymous complaint letters.
•Approved a new policy spelling out the district’s relationship with law enforcement agencies.
