John A. Cabas, a noted coach who grew up in city, dies at 94

NEW CASTLE — A notable player and coach from New Castle High School has died.

John A. Cabas, a 1936 New Castle graduate, died at the age of 94 in Salem, Ohio.

Cabas played football and basketball for the Red Hurricane and was a member of the 1935-36 WPIAL championship basketball team. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Mount Union (Ohio) College and a Master’s Degree from Westminster College. He later served in the U.S. Navy.

Cabas’ coaching career, which spanned 33 years in Ohio, began in Salineville in 1940, continuing in Wellsville, Columbiana, Case Tech (Western Reserve), Elyria and culminating in Salem from 1950 to 1973. He retired from the Salem City Schools in 1985 as assistant principal.

The entrance to the Salem High gym carries his name and the floor bears his signature.

Cabas was inducted into the Ohio High School Basketball Association Hall of Fame in 1987. He served as president of the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association from 1964 to 1966 and is credited with many innovations during his tenure.

Cabas compiled a 432-192 career record as a basketball coach, which includes a 1947 state title at Columbiana. He tallied two state runner-up finishes as well — 1945 at Columbiana and 1959 at Salem.

Cabas retired from coaching in 1972.

  • Our Opinion: State audit says city school district failed to collect from non-residents

Audit information about non-resident students who didn’t pay tuition at New Castle raises more questions than it answers. At least so far. We expect more details when the Pennsylvania auditor general’s office completes its report and the New Castle school district provides its response.

  • vote.jpg Our Opinion: We endorse candidates for New Castle board

The New Castle school district is often a study in contrasts. There are complaints about the district on everything from taxes to nepotism, from test scores to ethical slights. Yet at the same time, plenty of students within the district excel. It’s a tribute to the hard work of those students, their families and the educators who support them.
