New Castle to explore school repairs

NEW CASTLE — Repairs may be needed soon at George Washington Intermediate Elementary School.

At its meeting this week, the New Castle school board agreed to advertise for bids for replacement of the school’s second-floor roof, replacement of hallway and classroom flooring throughout the building and replacement of teachers desks and chairs.

The bids are being sought at the request of district business manager Joseph Ambrosini, who told the board at its work session this week that renovations will be needed at some point. He said he would like to see what the costs would be for planning purposes and the board can decide from there how to proceed.

The board also changed the nights for its work sessions and regular meetings for 2014.

The work sessions will begin at 6 p.m. the first Monday of each month and the regular meetings will be at 6:30 p.m. the second Monday of each month. Both are open to the public.

The board adopted a resolution indicating it will not raise the rate of any school taxes for the 2014-15 school year for the district by more than the index of 3.3 percent as established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

The board also recognized three people for the district’s monthly Pride and Promise awards. They are:

•Lori Fulvi, who taught at the elementary level in the district for 18 years. Fulvi was honored posthumously for her dedication to the students. She died Aug. 20, at the age of 50. Her son and daughter, Jay and Vanessa, accepted the award on her behalf.

•Alice Garcia, for her extensive work for the New Life Breadbasket program to feed the hungry. The program serves more than 800 families and is considered the largest effort of its kind in western Pennsylvania.

•Patrick Fox, 8, of the city’s West Side, an elementary student whose family moved into the district from New Jersey. Despite initial difficulties at school, Fox has gone on to excel as an honors student. West Side school principal Carmen Nocera said Fox’s parents, Marc A. and Cheryl L. Crewe, worked hard with the district to help Fox, adding Fox is “one of the best success stories in education.”

In other business, the board:

•Awarded a contract to IP Logic Inc. for a new voice mail server at a cost of $34,074. The company was the lowest bidder.

•Approved a three-year contract with Herff Jones, a yearbook printing company, for the 2015-16 junior/senior high yearbook at a cost of $6,745.

•Approved a contract with Juli Baumgarner as intern psychologist for Jan. 6 through Sept. 19 at a pay of $5,000 for 1,270 hours of work.

•Hired Sarah Puhala of Sharon as dramatics instructor for the school musicals.

•Approved a lease extension of 30 days with St. Joseph the Worker Church, through Jan. 31, to give the district time to move its supplies from the kindergarten into the new Lockley Early Learning Center.

•Added Adam Cvetich of Ellwood City to the substitute teacher list. He is Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV emergency certified.

•Accepted the retirement of Leroy Polding as a cafeteria driver, effective Dec. 20.

•Accepted the resignation of David Domenick as athletic ticket manager, effective Jan. 31.
