NEW CASTLE — It was a busy day for Marissa Kirkwood.

Kirkwood, a freshman and daughter of Neshannock golf coach Mike Kirkwood, played 18 holes yesterday morning in the MAC Tournament at Black Hawk Golf Course in Chippewa. She placed 11th in the event with an 89.

She followed it up with an impressive 38 at Grove City Country Club, just one shot better than team medalist Mike Maciarello, to lead the Lancers to a 159-170 win over Grove City. The top four scores are used in a match at the home of a District 10 school.

Matt Cioffi was next with a 40 and Grant Weaver added a 44.

“The course was beautiful and it played long; there were a lot of bunkers,” Neshannock coach Mike Kirkwood said. “I thought overall our kids did OK. I think if they played it again they’d do a little better.”

As for Marissa, Mike Kirkwood said, “She didn’t putt very well in the MAC. But it was nice to see her putt better at Grove City. I thought it was very good to see her shoot a 38 at Grove City.”

’Hounds roll

Shane McQuiston carded a 42 for Wilmington in a 184-194 nonregion win over Heartland Christian at Copeland Hills Golf Course in Columbiana, Ohio.

Matt Zimmer and Josh Bonnici both posted a 47, and Collin Duffy added a 48.

Laurel cruises

Nick Peluso fired a 36 to lead the Spartans to a 200-236 Section 5, Division 2 decision over Ellwood City at Del Mar Golf Course.

Shane Wilson was next for Laurel (6-2) with a 38 and Brady Crawford added a 41. Ben Armando contributed a 42 and Joe Dantico notched a 43.

Michael Rue and R.J. Leisie both shot a 45 for the Wolverines, and Justin Baney added a 47. Derek Baker supplied a 48 and Blake Beatrice chipped in with a 51.
