Lady Lancers fall hard in PIAA title game

NEW CASTLE — It just wasn’t Neshannock’s day.

The Lady Lancers were hoping to win their second straight PIAA softball title, but Williams Valley denied the dream with a 13-0 victory.

The Class A title game, played Friday afternoon at Penn State University, was stopped after the sixth inning because of the Mercy Rule.

Pitcher Madison Shaffer had been outstanding the entire season, but the Lady Vikings batted around the order in two innings, and benefited from a couple of bases loaded walks.

The Lady Lancers managed three singles on the afternoon.

Neshannock finishes its season with a WPIAL championship and a 21-3 record.

Sports writers Ron Poniewasz Jr. and Andrew Petyak will have complete details from the contest in Saturday’s Weekend edition. They were joined by photographer Erica Galvin and videographer Ashley Hautala, who will share their work in the newspaper and on www.ncnewsonline.com.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 fell from the sky in Donetsk, Ukraine, on Thursday, killing all 298 people aboard. Many are speculating that Russian rebels (supported by Vladimir Putin) are responsible for downing the aircraft. What do you think?

Yes. All evidence points that way.
No. Everyone is so quick to point fingers, but there's not enough evidence to support claims of Russian guilt.
I'm not sure. I'll just wait until the investigation is over to make up my mind.
What is up with these Malaysian Airlines planes? I know one airline I won't be flying any time soon...
