Video: Neshannock grad Sansone blasts first homer for Florida State

NEW CASTLE — Freshman John Sansone blasted his first career homer as the Florida State University baseball team topped Florida Gulf Coast University, 12-9.

Sansone went 2-for-2 yesterday with a pair of walks in the game at Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium.

The former Neshannock High standout, now a starting second baseman for the Seminoles, connected on his first collegiate round-tripper in the third to highlight FSU’s five-run third inning. Sansone took a 2-2 pitch from FGCU starter Zack Tillery off the scoreboard in left for a two-run shot. He scored twice and drove in two runs.

You might have heard of Florida Gulf Coast University over the past couple of weeks. The Eagles gained national attention after the school’s basketball team busted brackets everywhere by earning a trip to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA basketball tournament.

A sixth-inning grand slam from Stephen McGee proved to be the difference in a five-run sixth for No. 7 Florida State (25-4) over No. 25 FGCU (18-7).
