College Football: Neshannock’s Welker to play at Mercyhurst

NEW CASTLE — Alex Welker will continue his football career at the collegiate level.

The Neshannock High wide receiver/defensive back has committed to playing at NCAA Division II Mercyhurst University in the fall.

Welker established career highs in receptions (39), rushing attempts (25), receiving yards (701), rushing yards (232) and touchdowns (12) a season ago as the Lancers captured their first Big Seven conference championship in school history. The team finished 10-2 and advanced to the WPIAL Class A semifinals before falling to eventual PIAA champion Clairton. Welker’s 702 receiving yards led both Neshannock and Lawrence County.

For his career, Welker, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, finished with 1,057 receiving yards on 64 receptions and rushed for 370 yards on 48 attempts for 16 total touchdowns.
