It’s an opportunity four years in the making. That’s how long it’s been since the Mohawk boys basketball team has gotten a taste of the WPIAL playoffs. Now that the drought has ended, the Warriors would prefer that their season not end any time soon.

Lawrence County farmers, square dance teams and FFA members who attended the Pennsylvania Farm Show last month returned with honors. The week-long event took place at the state farm show complex in Harrisburg. Dozens of Lawrence County residents traveled to Harrisburg to compete or cheer on participants.

In the schools: Mohawk upgrades security
The Mohawk school district will spend $113,000 to upgrade security at its two buildings. The district will purchase nine digital cameras for school buses, 24 additional security cameras and a new intercom system for the elementary building and an upgraded security system at building doors.

Lawrence County’s district attorney is planning a school safety summit of sorts after the first of the year. Joshua Lamancusa said he will meet with district officials, security guards and police to determine what security measures are in place at local schools and what can be done to enhance them.

Mastering modern handwriting skills can prove challenging enough for elementary school students. Mohawk sixth-graders, though, tried their hand at a written form of communication dating back 5,000 years.

Mohawk vo-ag classes apply skills outside classroom
Mohawk’s vocational agriculture and masonry students got hands-on experience by helping with two district projects. They assisted in constructing new baseball field dugouts. Vo-ag forestry students also helped design, plan and construct a landscaped area in front of the elementary.

Gym dandies: Mohawk teacher, superintendent earn state honor for dedication to phys ed
It’s an honor for any school district to receive recognition from the state. For the Mohawk Area School District, the distinctions are twofold. Lou Ann Miller, elementary physical education instructor, is the recipient of Teacher of the Year for Elementary Physical Education. Kathleen Kwolek, superintendent, is receiving the Layman Award for the state.

Patriotism and a deep appreciation of freedom were on display from every nook and cranny of the Scottish Rite Cathedral. More than 200 Lawrence County veterans and their guests were treated to a rousing, 90-minute salute from the Mohawk School community and others during the 14th annual Veterans Day program yesterday morning.

Township grants conditional use for electric plant
A St. Louis company wanting to build a gas-powered electrical plant in North Beaver has passed a zoning hurdle. Following a public hearing, the township supervisors granted a conditional use to LS Power to build a $750 million electricity-generating plant off Route 551, on the former American Cyanamid property.
