The Mohawk school board authorized spending more than $36,000 to improve building safety.
Investments approved at the meeting this week include:
•$4,800 to install Raptor visitor management software at both buildings. The company, based in Houston, identifies visitors at the door, printing a tag with the visitor’s photo, name and destination within the building.
•$4,200 to purchase a 360-degree security camera for the elementary school from Open Arc of Ingomar, Pa.
•$11,920 to purchase and install door locks at the elementary school from A.G. Mauro Co. of Pittsburgh.
•$2,514 to purchase and install door hardware/glass at the entrance of the district office at the high school from Youngstown Mirror & Glass Co.
•$5,379 to purchase and install doors/hardware at the elementary school boiler room from Youngstown Mirror and Glass Co.
•$7,394 to purchase and install doors/glass/hardware at the entrance of the elementary cafeteria from Youngstown Mirror and Glass Co.
The board raised the real estate tax collectors’ salaries, effective Jan. 1, 2014. The district uses the services of five tax collectors. Board members agreed to raise salaries the current rate of $3,700 per year to $4,000 for each of the four years of the contract. Tax collectors will also be paid $4 per real estate card turned in. They are currently paid $3.85 per card.
Also this week, the board:
•Awarded a contract to purchase two school buses, at $83,346 each, from Myers Equipment Corp. of Canfield. Ohio. Mohawk replaces two of its 30-bus fleet each year. The district covers about 100 square miles.
•Approved the school calendar for the 2013-14 school year. The first day of school will be Aug. 26, and the last day classes is June 5, 2014.
•Granted a leave to elementary teacher Jeannie Davis from May 15 through June 6.
•Agreed to sell an unused 0.172 acre parcel of land in Bessemer to David Dean for $500.
•Voted to expel a high school student. No other information was provided.
•Tabled consideration to assess the brick facade of the 30-year-old elementary school.
•Accepted the audit report for the 2011-12 school year from auditor Mark Turnley and state audit reports of the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years. No findings were reported on any of the audits.

WPIAL Softball Playoffs: Mohawk rolls to win
Mohawk High’s battery gave the team a positive charge yesterday. The pitcher-catcher duo of Jaki Bender and Lucia Fee powered the Lady Warriors softball squad to a 7-0 victory over Brentwood in the first round of the WPIAL Class AA playoffs at North Allegheny High School.

Mohawk senior shines at county trivia contest
Mohawk senior Katelyn Byers retired this year as the undisputed champion of the Lawrence County Historical Society Trivia competition. Over the last four years, Katelyn won four Individual and three team championships.

Children’s author engages Mohawk Head Start students in reading fun
The bulletin board in the Head Start classroom at Mohawk Elementary School spelled out, “Welcome, Suzanne Bloom.” The greeting was for the children’s author/illustrator from Binghamton, N.Y.

Mohawk Junior High students will display their artwork from 7 to 9 p.m. May 7 at the school. The 23rd annual Junior High Art show is hosted by instructor Pam Pagley.

Kindergarten Camp scheduled for Mohawk pre-schoolers
For the fifth year, the Mohawk school district will have a Kindergarten Camp in August. These sessions, school board members were told this week, will introduce the district’s newest — and youngest — students to the school building, the teachers and each other.
