High School Hoops: Mohawk girls get spot in PIAA playoffs

NEW CASTLE — Last week, the Bishop Canevin girls basketball team was Mohawk’s worst enemy.

Last night, the Lady Crusaders were its best friend.

The Lady Warriors clinched a PIAA Class AA playoff bid by virtue of Bishop Canevin’s 55-19 victory over Burrell in the WPIAL semifinals.

Mohawk was eliminated by the Lady Crusaders last week in a 56-44 decision and needed some help to qualify for the state tournament. It got it from the same team that spelled its doom no more than five days ago.

“It extends our life at least two more weeks here,” said Lady Warriors coach Mike O’Lare, who attended last night’s Bishop Canevin-Burrell game. “It’s better than turning in our uniforms.”

With Bishop Canevin’s win over Burrell, the Mohawk girls can finish no worse than the sixth seed from District 7 in Class AA. The Lady Crusaders will square off against top-seeded Seton-La Salle in the championship game at 5 p.m. Friday at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

“When you get into that situation where you’re back into the tournament, you’re playing for your life every night,” O’Lare said. “We’re going to go in there to win it.”

Mohawk will play its first-round matchup March 8 with an opponent, time and place to be determined. If Bishop Canevin wins the WPIAL championship, the Lady Warriors will go in as the fifth-place team, otherwise it will be the sixth-place entry.

Nah, it's probably not that interesting.
I don't know. I'm afraid of what I might find out.
