No tax increase for Mohawk

NEW CASTLE — The Mohawk school board has approved a $21.7 million budget that holds the line on taxes.

Board members this week approved the 2013-14 spending plan of $21,714,781, which is about $1 million greater than the current year’s budget. The additional funding, officials said, is because of money required for pension programs.

Real estate tax remains at 13.09 mills.

The district anticipates revenues of $4,749,043 from real estate taxes, $61,000 from a $10 per capita tax, $1,090,000 collected through earned income tax, $65,000 through real estate transfer taxes and $9,678,198 from a state basic education subsidy.

Additional money to balance the budget will come from the district’s fund balance.

The board approved the budget on a 6-0 vote. Eugene Butch Jr., Jonathan Laugher, Diane Gwin, Scott Singer, Mark Hiler and board president Ted Morrow voted yes. J. James Curatola, Lori Griffin and David Spears were absent.

By the same 6-0 vote, the board approved the 2013-14 budget for the Lawrence County Career and Technical Center. The district’s share is $564,095.

Also at the meeting, the board:

•Retained Dr. Joseph Gallo as the school physician at $8,000 per year.

•Agreed to raise lunch and milk prices by 5 cents in the new school year. Lunch prices will be $1.55 for elementary students and $1.70 for high school students. Milk prices will be 45 cents. Milk will be supplied by Austintown Dairy of Youngstown. Breakfast prices will remain at 90 cents for all students.

•Granted tenure to high school special education teacher Ben Edwards and elementary teacher Jamilyn Maiorano.

•Noted that the audit of the district by the Pennsylvania Department of Education contained no findings or observations. The audit covers the years ending June 30, 2009, and June 30, 2010.

•Approved two band volunteers, Stacy DeCarbo as majorette choreographer and Ralph Rich as assistant volunteer band manager.

•Canceled the July meeting, set for July 1.

Do you talk to yourself when you're alone?

Yes, but I’m basically just thinking out loud.
No, that would be weird.
I don’t know. Next time I’m alone, I’ll ask.
