WPIAL Soccer Playoffs: Mohawk girls fall in consolation game

NEW CASTLE — The Mohawk High girls soccer team came up short in the WPIAL Class A consolation game Saturday.

Shady Side Academy scored the game’s first five goals en route to a 5-2 win over the Lady Warriors at Baldwin High School.

“It’s not a disappointing result at all,” Mohawk coach Mike Shornack said. “I think we did as well as we could do.

“We rose to the occasion and we played the best we could play. We laid it on the line. It would have been harder to accept if you let the other team beat you. But they played their hearts out the whole game.”

The Lady Indians (15-5-1) will square off against Fairview, the District 10 champion, at 5 p.m. tomorrow at Erie Veterans Stadium in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.

Mikala Mangino scored both of the Lady Warriors’ goals, which came in the game’s final 20 minutes. Savanna Jones and Katelyn Byers added one assist apiece for Mohawk.

“The girls never quit,” Shornack said. “They got a little demoralized, but they didn’t quit.”

Freshman Aliya Gage stopped 13 shots in goal for the Lady Warriors (10-10-1).

The Lady Indians led 2-0 at the half.

“I thought our defense still played good,” Shornack said. “They had two strikers that were phenomenal.

“Shady Side Academy is a really strong team. I’m very proud to get to the final four of the WPIAL playoffs. There’s a lot to be said about that, especially as young as we are. The Sewickley Academy game (in the semifinals) was a great battle. We knocked off some high seeds to get to this point.”

Shornack has a young team that he believes will get better.

“The future of the program is bright,” Shornack said. “At times, we have seven freshmen in the game and six of them start.

“We’re going to be an up-and-coming program. My senior leaders were tough, too. They were great leaders for us.”
