Mohawk buys new school buses

NEW CASTLE — The Mohawk Area School District has purchased new school buses.

The school board members Monday agreed to buy two buses from Wolfington Body Co., of Exton, Pa. at a cost of $79,015 per bus.

The district typically purchases two buses per year to update its fleet of about 25 buses.

District business manager/board secretary Janet Crum said the older buses are kept as spares or sold at auction as new buses are rotated into use.

The board also approved a calendar for the 2014-15 school year. School will start for students on Aug. 25 and graduation and the last day of school is set for June 4, 2015.

The board also:

•Accepted the annual financial audit for fiscal year ending June 30, 2013, by Kim Turnley as presented at the January meeting. There were no findings.

•Granted family leave to elementary teacher Kristy Bailey and cafeteria worker Sheryl Verterano.

•Authorized junior student Katie Callahan to seek a state office in the Family Career and Community Leaders of America. Katie is currently a state vice president within the organization. Board approval is needed when a student seeks a state office within an organization.

•Approved use of the high school cafeteria by the Bessemer Rotary Club for its annual spaghetti dinner on March 30.

•Authorized Lawrence County Department of Public Safety to use the gym, auxiliary gym and locker rooms between 6 and 10 p.m. June 11 and 18 for a training and exercise session that will include the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed “unprecedented” legislation yesterday to expand gun rights in his state. Good idea?

Yes. Expanding the scope of where people can carry guns can help halt violent crimes and make those places safer.
No. Carrying guns into bars and schools is NEVER a good idea. I think it will lead to more violence.
Not sure, but I don’t plan to visit Georgia any time soon.
