Five Mohawk seniors get scholarships

NEW CASTLE — The Mohawk Community Education Foundation has awarded five Mohawk High School seniors with scholarships for their continued education.

A total of $4,500 was presented at the senior class awards assembly in June by foundation Board President David Spears.

The recipients are:

•Peter Barber, who plans to attend Ohio State University majoring in electrical/computer engineering;

•Michael Henry who plans to attend Penn State University’s Behrend Campus in Erie Penn as an electrical engineering technology major;

•Samantha Miller, who plans to pursue a degree in Spanish education from Geneva College in Beaver County;

•Michele VanTassel who intends to major in actuarial science at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh.

•Melanie Kosior, who received the Stephanie Marie Pezzone Scholarship in memory of the Class of 1987 graduate. Kosior plans to attend Butler County Community College as a business management major. The scholarship is given to a student majoring in the business field.

 Funds for the scholarships were raised through  donations from community residents.

The tax-exempt foundation was formed in April, 2006, and seeks contributions from the Mohawk community and school alumni to benefit the district through scholarships, innovative educational programs and community-based projects.

The three-year-old foundation was formed when friends of the Mohawk community organized.

    Mohawk’s school board approved a contract to repair air conditioning at the elementary school. School board members, meeting in a special session Monday, awarded the $88,390 pact to Central Heating and Plumbing, the lowest of three bids received.

  • Mohawk OKs tax abatement for racetrack

    The Mohawk school board approved a five-year tax abatement for Endeka Entertainment. The abatement covers about 200 acres in Mahoning Township that is the site of the proposed harness racetrack and casino.

  • No tax increase expected at Mohawk

    No tax increase is anticipated for the Mohawk school district. The board introduced a $21,714,781 budget for the 2013-14 school year that is 5 percent more than the current budget of $20,703,767.

    Mohawk High’s battery gave the team a positive charge yesterday. The pitcher-catcher duo of Jaki Bender and Lucia Fee powered the Lady Warriors softball squad to a 7-0 victory over Brentwood in the first round of the WPIAL Class AA playoffs at North Allegheny High School.

    Mohawk senior Katelyn Byers retired this year as the undisputed champion of the Lawrence County Historical Society Trivia competition. Over the last four years, Katelyn won four Individual and three team championships.
