The dominance continued for the Mohawk High girls track and field team.
Corey Mitchell won two events to lead the Lady Warriors to their 12th straight championship in the Tri-County Invitational on Saturday.
The event was held at Shenango High School.
Mohawk rolled up 141 points, topping second-place Shenango, which posted 1151⁄2 markers.
“Weather-wise, I had a lot of concern with the cold temperatures,” Lady Warriors coach Dave Bredl said. “I wasn’t sure how they’d respond with the weather, but I thought they handled it well.
“There were some areas we didn’t do as well as I would have liked and other areas where we did better than I thought we would. It evened out in that respect.”
Mitchell won the 100 (13.0) and participated on the victorious 400-meter relay team. The Lady Warriors’ team of Mitchell, Ciara Sackin, Paden Jones and Melissa Durbin rolled to a first-place time of 51.7.
The 400 relay team tied the invitational record, which was set by Farrell. No other record in the invitational was tied or broken on Saturday.
“I thought Mitchell did well in the 100; that was a surprise,” Bredl said. “She had a good day.”
Bredl acknowledged his team’s battle to extend the winning streak at the Tri-County.
“It’s all about tradition,” he said. “The girls knew going into this they’d have a tough time. But they wanted to keep that streak alive.
“I expected it to be even closer. Shenango is a very good team. They have a very nice team and a lot of their kids stepped up. I do think other teams are gunning for us. Other teams are bringing their best game to the meet; I’m very proud of the girls and very pleased for them that they got the win.”
Shenango’s Michelle Watson won the discus with a toss of 112 feet, while placing second in the shot put and second in the javelin. She captured the field MVP.
“Michelle did very well; she’s a great athlete,” Lady Wildcats coach Brian Cooper said. “She’s right there in the WPIAL in the throws.
“She was really consistent with her throws on Saturday. Hopefully she starts popping them even further.”
Cooper noted he got a lot of strong performances from a variety of girls.
“Adriana DePorzio had a very good meet and Dina Ludovici did a great job,” he said. “Lauren Pruchnic has had a great year in the pole vault event and she performed well at the Tri-County.
“Amanda Herb and Kelly Hupko both scored well, too. They’ve been great leaders as well.”
Ellwood City Lincoln’s Angela McCowin captured the track MVP. McCowin won the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and placed tied for third in the 200 with Sackin.
Riverside rolled to the boys championship, registering 1501⁄2 points. Shenango was second with 91 tallies.
“The Riverside boys have a very good team,” Wildcats boys coach Scott Sauders said. “That was a surprise for us to get second. We were really happy with our performances.
Ronnie Davis led Shenango with two wins (300 hurdles, 1600 relay).
“I was really happy with Ronnie Davis,” Sauders said. “He’s been a guy that’s had a good week.
“He came on at the MAC meet with a really good time in the 300 hurdles, and an even better time at the Tri-County.
“I’m really happy for him. He continues to work hard.”
The Panthers’ Bobby Gould won the track MVP and Shenango’s Avery Pears claimed the field MVP.
“Avery is a really great athlete,” Sauders said. “We’ve been really happy with him all year. I think you’ll see some really good throws from him in the shot put the rest of the way.”

Mohawk OKs tax abatement for racetrack
The Mohawk school board approved a five-year tax abatement for Endeka Entertainment. The abatement covers about 200 acres in Mahoning Township that is the site of the proposed harness racetrack and casino.

WPIAL Softball Playoffs: Mohawk rolls to win
Mohawk High’s battery gave the team a positive charge yesterday. The pitcher-catcher duo of Jaki Bender and Lucia Fee powered the Lady Warriors softball squad to a 7-0 victory over Brentwood in the first round of the WPIAL Class AA playoffs at North Allegheny High School.
