Historical society features CCC
America’s Civilian Conservation Corps, “the tree soldiers,” turns 80 this year. In celebration of this milestone, the CCC will be featured at Wednesday’s meeting of the Lawrence County Historical Society.

Children’s author engages Mohawk Head Start students in reading fun
The bulletin board in the Head Start classroom at Mohawk Elementary School spelled out, “Welcome, Suzanne Bloom.” The greeting was for the children’s author/illustrator from Binghamton, N.Y.

Union hires principal
Michael Ross has been named the new principal at Union High School. Ross was hired during a special meeting Tuesday night.

County jobless rate declines
The unemployment rate in Lawrence County dipped in March, according to the latest statistics available. The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry reported that the seasonally adjusted rate was 8.0 percent. February’s rate was 8.1 percent.

The Lawrence County Young Republicans will have a meet-the-candidates mixer Monday.

Ohio gives Penn National the go-ahead
The Ohio Racing Commission Wednesday gave Penn National Gaming the green light to relocate two racetracks. The approval was unanimous to transfer a thoroughbred racetrack from Columbus to Austintown and a harness track from Toledo to Dayton.

Bond lender gets OK
A county agency that facilitates loans has approved Citigroup Global Markets as a bond lending institution. County commissioner Dan Vogler reported Tuesday that the Lawrence County Industrial Development Authority approved the firm for the issuance of a $50 million bond transaction that would help fund the racetrack/casino proposed for Mahoning Township. The vote was 5-0.

Veterans benefits seminar scheduled
A veterans benefits seminar has been set for Friday. The session will run from 2 to 4 p.m. in the commissioners meeting room at the Lawrence County Courthouse.

PennDOT painting lines on I-79
Line painting is being done on Interstate 79 from Lawrence County to Pittsburgh, beginning this week. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation crews will work from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and Saturdays.
