A one-vehicle crash yesterday on Sampson Street sent two people to the hospital.
Amanda Knauff, 31, of New Castle was flown by helicopter to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where she was listed this morning in critical condition.
She was a front-seat passenger in a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GT operated by Sally Vernon, 56, of Court Street, who was admitted to Jameson Hospital. Her condition was not available, but New Castle police said she suffered major injury.
According to police, Vernon was westbound just before 1:40 p.m. when she lost control of her car, and the right side of the vehicle struck a tree.
Police said she and Knauff each wore lap and shoulder belts.
The car was removed from the scene by Del’s Towing.
The westbound lanes of the highway were closed between 30 minutes and an hour while emergency officials cleared up the crash site.
