Only the horse appeared to be hurt when a car hit an Amish buggy yesterday in Pulaski Township.
Nine people escaped injury.
Pulaski Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Guy Morse, who was at the scene, said a car driven by Andrea Cioffi, 17, no address provided, hit the back of an Amish buggy driven by Emanuel Troyer, 27, of New Wilmington. The Amish family of eight was headed to the home of family-member Rudy Byler of Route 208. The accident occurred shortly after 3 p.m.
“I’m concerned about the horse,” Troyer said. “He was bleeding. I’m going to have to take him somewhere to get checked to be sure there are no problems, no ligament damage.”
Troyer’s wife, Sarah, and six children ages 8 to 12 weeks, were driven by an ambulance to a neighbor’s home following the accident. Troyer remained at the scene to survey damage to his buggy. He estimated repairs will cost $3,000 to $4,000.
“These are actually pretty sturdy,” he said of the buggy as he looked at the missing wheel.
This is the second time Troyer was hit by an passing motorist.
“When I was 16, I was driving a buggy that was hit from behind,” he recalled. “No one was hurt in that accident either.”
Troyer said he and his family were going to his brother-in-law’s house and three cars were behind them. The first car passed, but the second car in the line, driven by Cioffi, plowed into the back left quarter of the buggy, he said.
“I don’t think that she saw me,” he said.
The third car in the line stopped to offer help, he said.
