FUND-RAISER: For police dog

Ellwood City borough officials hope to raise $10,000 in Friday’s fund-raiser for its police dog.

The expenses already incurred include:

•$5,678 — Purchase price for the dog from Shallow Creek Kennels, Mercer County

•$6,250 — Cost for 10 weeks of training from Moloney’s K-9 Academy

•$29,354 — Cost for customized cruiser with dog cage, remote-controlled door release, special food and water bowls and other items from Day Ford, Monroeville

•$1,100 — Insurance

•$219 — Doghouse for the kennel

In addition, the borough will have ongoing expenses for the dog including veterinary bills, weekly training, an estimated $80 a month for food, insurances, vehicle maintenance, working dog replacement leashes and harnesses, and kennel fencing.



The donations already received from government, businesses and individuals include:

•$25,000 — Grant secured by former state Rep. Frank LaGrotta for the cost of the dog, training and related expenses.

•$12,500 — Grant for the cruiser obtained by state Sen. Gerald LaValle

•$800 — For Jozek’s protective vest from Beth Hazen of Nationwide Insurance

•$1,000 — From the May Emma Hoyt Foundation

•$607.49 — Earnings from working security for school dances from Ellwood City police officers

•$2,000 — In $500 donations from each of the following: Eric Ryan Corp., John Marker, Turner Funeral Home and Qasim Jaffry

•$500 — In donations of $250 each from Ellwood City Forge and ESB Bank

•$400 — Through donations of $200 each from Michelle Cavalier and Janice Barensfeld

•$900 — Through donations of $100 each from Barry’s Amoco, T&M; Hardware, Dr. Anthony DiBiagio, Dr. Brad Brown, William and Kathy Blank, Culligan Water, Hungarian Home, Aiken Refuse and King’s Daughter’s class

•$250 — In donations of $50 each from Wilson Insurance, Beth Hazen, Gerald Crowley, Sons of Italy and Pizza Joe’s

•$100 — Through donations of $25 each from Air Physical Therapy, Airway Industries, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 252 and H. David Reynolds

•$10 — M.E. Hancher.

    The Lawrence County Economic Development Corp. presented updated plans last night for development of the Cascade Center at the Riverplex. Linda Nitch, corporation executive director, told New Castle City Council that the agency has a sales agreement with S&T Bank to buy the building for $1.5 million.

    FNB Corp. has declared a quarterly cash dividend of 12 cents per share on its common stock. The corporation, based in Hermitage, is the parent firm of First National Bank of Pennsylvania.

    The Lawrence County commissioners don’t want the public walking through clouds of cigarette smoke to get into government buildings. For that reason, they are amending the county’s no-smoking ordinance to create a designated smoking area for courthouse employees and the public.
