Local heroes honored
Certificates of Heroism were presented Thursday night to three deceased area residents, recognized by American Legion Post 343. They are:
*Cpl. Albert P. Gettings of New Castle. A squad leader of the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Fox Company, he died Jan. 5 in Fallujah, Iraq, after being hit by a sniper's bullet. Gettings was the first Lawrence County serviceman killed in action in Iraq and the first man of his unit to die. The award was received by his parents, David and Julie Gettings.
*Lt. Col. Michael E. McLaughlin of Mercer County. The Pennsylvania Army National Guard member died Jan. 5, in Ramadi, Iraq, the victim of a suicide bomber. He was the first official of the Pennsylvania National Guard killed in action since World War II. The award was presented by Lt. Col. Gray Berrier to McLaughlin's family.
*Staff Sgt. Edward A. DeCarbo, a medic in the Army-Air Corps. On Jan. 29, 1943, he helped save the life of a B-24 pilot who had crashed at Patterson Field, now Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, near Dayton, Ohio. This award was accepted by his son, Donald DeCarbo.
The post, at 134 N. Jefferson St., has conducted an Annual Past Commanders Banquet since 1919, honoring not only past commanders but also those who distinguished themselves, according to post adjutant Dan Carney.
In addition to honoring 16 past commanders, the post also recognized members with 50 and 60 years of continuous membership.
Sixty-year members cited were William Brandon, John Chumra, Guy Christie, Frank Colucci, Mike Dukovich, Ralph Exposito, Merle Hildebrand, Ralph Audino, Jack Aubel, Charles McGrath, William Pfeiffer, Albert Pillifant, Harry Rosen, Charles Shepp, Hubert Wilson, Ralph Markley.
Fifty-year members recognized were Charles Joseph and Thomas Tommello.

Bureau announces firefighter funding
Local volunteer fire organizations have been awarded state funding to assist in fighting wildfires. A record $666,553 will be distributed.

New Beaver tax bills are wrong
The 2010 tax bills for New Beaver Borough are incorrect. According to tax collector, the total due and payable amounts printed on the bills are incorrect.

Charges against teen withdrawn
Attempted homicide and other charges against West Side teenager Lewis Brewer have been withdrawn. District Judge Jennifer Nicholson signed the petition.

Man ordered to court in drugs, guns case
A man charged with illegally possessing drugs and guns has been held for court.
Paris Maurice Lippett remains in the Lawrence County jail on $100,000 bond. -
Seven local parishes to remain open
Seven Catholic parishes in Lawrence County will remain open until 2012. However, as of Sept. 1, six of the parishes will be joined for staffing purposes.

Pharmacist helps nab alleged robber
A pharmacist yesterday helped apprehend a gunman who had robbed his drugstore. Matthew Douglas Elmore walked into the East Side Pharmacy at 11 a.m.

Highland Avenue works starts today
Crews will be working on a portion of Highland Avenue starting today. The project will be between Englewood and Lawnview avenues. -
Union township hotel has grand opening today
The Hampton Inn in Union Township is open for business. A group of local officials and business leaders gathered for a reception at the new hotel on State Street at noon today.

City gets millions from sale of sanitary sewers
The city of New Castle has netted $17,328,000 from the sale of its sanitary sewers. City officials had set $16.5 million as the minimum figure they wanted from the sale of the system to the New Castle Sanitation Authority.

Accused arsonists heading to court
Thirteen charges were held for court, nine dismissed and two withdrawn at preliminary hearings Wednesday for two city men. Half brothers Steven Sheridan and Mark Quear were among six New Castle residents arrested.
