Laurel names principal

NEW CASTLE — The Laurel School Board named Daniel Svirbly as junior/senior high school principal.

His appointment begins with the 2013-14 school year. He will receive a salary of $90,000.

Svirbly is currently serving as a half-time secondary principal and half-time grant manager for the Keystone to Opportunities-Striving Readers Grant the district received last year.

In other personnel matters:

•Diane Downing was hired as secondary life skills support teacher for the next school year at a salary of $41,751.

•Audrey Hearn was hired as a custodian for 4 1/2 hours per day at $9.90 per hour.

•An extension to the unpaid, non-benefit leave of absence for April Edwards-Elliott, a secondary teacher, was approved for the 2013-14 school year.

    Area motorcyclists will be heading out once again this month to pay tribute to the nation’s soldiers and veterans. The second annual Fallen Warrior Ride is scheduled to leave Cascade Park at 6 p.m. Aug. 15 for a one-hour, circuitous route to Laurel High School. Once there, riders — led by the Patriot Honor Guard of Western Pennsylvania — will parade into the Lawrence County Fairgrounds, where they’ll join a Salute to the American Soldiers: For God and Country, a crusade by Vision Ministries of Lawrence County.
