Conservation district picks photo winners

NEW CASTLE — The Lawrence County Conservation District has announced the winners of the 2013 photo contest.

The first place entry was submitted by Michelle Brzuz of Grove City and titled “Wheel Shop Lane.” Taken in Volant, it shows a gravel path lined with trees and flowers. The judges commented that the photo was both photographically excellent and celebrates Lawrence County.

Brzuz received a $100 award for the photo. She was also received $10 for her honorable mention photo, “Robin with Worm,” also taken in Volant.

The second-place photo was submitted by Dorothy Monahan of Oil City and titled “Humming Along.” The photo is a close-up shot of a hummingbird moth at a flower at the West Park Nature Center in Union Township.

Monahan received a $75 prize. She also was awarded $10 for her honorable mention, “Balancing Act,” of a dragonfly on a seed pod, also at West Park.

The third-place photo was submitted by Jack Marti of New Wilmington. “Veggies for Sale” shows a hand-painted sign and field in Pulaski Township. Third place prize was $50. Marti also received $10 for his honorable mention, “Morning on the Back Forty,” taken along Route 956 in New Wilmington.

Other honorable mentions were awarded to Kathy Chirdon of New Castle for her “Country Lane,” and Shirley Seymour for her “Kildeer-Broken Wing Act” taken at Grassy Crest Farm in Plain Grove Township. Each received $10.

The winners were selected from among 28 entries.

Judges were Harry Meyer, Rick Cornelius and Tom Delegram of the Pittsburgh Academy of Science and Art, photo division.

The winners, along with additional favorites picked by the conservation district staff, are on display in the lobby of the Lawrence County courthouse, which is open from 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.

The deadline for the 2014 contest is Jan. 9.

The contest is intended to showcase the natural beauty of the area. Images may be of woodlands, streams, farms, rivers, conservation practices, wildlife and similar themes. Photos may be color or black and white.
