City to name playground for deceased officer

NEW CASTLE — New Castle City Council has introduced an ordinance to rename a playground in memory of police Sgt. Robert Lepore.

The city has received a $5,000 from an anonymous donor to be used to buy a batting cage for the baseball fields. In exchange, the donor has requested council rename the Clayton Street playground in Mahoningtown as the Sgt. Robert Lepore Playground.

In a memo to council this week, business administrator Stephanie Dean said the individual wants the flexibility to buy additional equipment for the playground in the future.

Lepore, who lived in Mahoningtown, died in 2008 at age 44.
