NEW CASTLE — It’s amazing what a little nice weather and some word-of-mouth will do.

Family Worship Center and the Christian Motorcyclists Association held their second annual Blessing of the Bikes yesterday on Kennedy Square. And whereas last year’s inaugural, rain-soaked event attracted about 50 bikes, an estimated 200 circled the western half of Kennedy Square and lined the section of West Washington Street in front of the New Castle Community YMCA under yesterday’s sunny skies.

Several motorcycle clubs from around the region were represented.

The afternoon got under way with food, kids’ activities and live music from Good News Blues. That went on from 1 to 3, when the blessing service kicked off with Gary Hassan playing “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes and T.R. Walker singing the national anthem.

Afterward, the bikers were asked to line up behind their motorcyles and join hands while Rich Shira of New Castle and Bill Bloom of Rochester, president of the Remnant Sons Motorcycle Club, each prayed for an overall blessing of those assembled.

Afterward, members of the Christian Motorcycle Association circled the square to pray with those looking for an individualized blessing of their bikes.

The event capped a series of monthly Bikers Unite dinners at Family Worship Center and served as a kickoff to the motorcycle season.
