Groundhogs hamper rehabilitation effort
Groundhogs are interfering with rehabilitation of juvenile offenders. Ted Memo, a juvenile probation officer, told the Lawrence County commissioners Tuesday that groundhogs did major damage to an ongoing garden project for young offenders this year.
City tax deadline extended
The New Castle treasurer’s office has extended the deadline to pay taxes until Jan. 2. All payments must be received in the treasurer’s office in person or postmarked by Jan. 2. Unpaid taxes will be turned over to the Lawrence County Tax Claim Bureau after the deadline.
County planning changes OK’d
Updates to the Lawrence County Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance drew no public comment prior to being adopted Tuesday.

New Castle to explore school repairs
Repairs may be needed soon at George Washington Intermediate Elementary School. At its meeting this week, the New Castle school board agreed to advertise for bids for replacement of the school’s second-floor roof, replacement of hallway and classroom flooring throughout the building and replacement of teachers desks and chairs.
Tax deadline announced
The deadline for Wayne residents to pay their township, school and per capita taxes is 4 p.m. Dec. 30. Rosina Betz, Wayne Township tax collector, said all payments made after Sunday must be by money order, certified bank check or cash.
Gabriel tops in campaign spending
George Gabriel led all New Castle school board candidates in spending for the general election campaign. In reports filed at the Lawrence County courthouse, Gabriel listed $929.56 in expenses. He reported $850.05 in receipts — all of it his money — in his pre–election and post-election reports covering the periods from June 11 through Nov. 25.
Commission reviews business development plans
The Lawrence County Planning Commission reviewed land development plans for three businesses at its meeting this week.
New building part of Mahoning’s budget
Mahoning Township’s 2014 budget provides for a new municipal building but does not raise taxes. The $3,052,493 general fund budget, which the supervisors approved unanimously Wednesday, includes $2 million for a new building and furnishings.
Mahoning to close trash collection site
Mahoning officials are putting new limits on the use of township trash containers. Supervisor Gary Pezzuolo said that as a result of abuses at all three trash dumping sites, one site will be eliminated and two others will have new restrictions.
