Fundraiser set for canine officer

NEW CASTLE — A fundraiser has been set to buy protective gear for Mahoning Township’s canine officer.

Police Chief James Morris told the Mahoning Township supervisors Thursday that the department is teaming up with “K9s In Need” for a pasta dinner and Chinese auction to benefit the department’s dog, Vex.

Vex is expected to make an appearance at the event, which will be from 3 to 7 p.m. March 29 at the Mahoning Township Community Center, 4512 W. State St., Edinburg.

The event also will include a wine basket, cash giveaway and bake sale.

A portion of the proceeds will go to “Project: Vested Vex,” which is an effort to get Vex a bulletproof and stab-proof vest.

Morris said the effort came about because of the death of a canine officer in the city of Pittsburgh, who was recently stabbed during a confrontation and later died.

Dinners are $8 for adults and $5 for those ages five to 12. Those under 5 can eat free.

The dinner will include pasta and meatballs, bread and butter, salad, drinks and dessert. Takeouts will be available.

Also at the meeting:

•Supervisor Vito Yeropoli announced packets will be mailed out next week to residents of Edinburg and North Edinburg with information about tapping into the new sewer line.

•The supervisors reminded residents the Mahoning Township Fire Department has started its annual Lenten fish dinners, which will be 4 to 7 p.m. Fridays at the Edinburg Fire Department.

•The supervisors announced the annual spring trash pickup will be the last week of April and the first week of May.
