NEW CASTLE —
The New Castle Area School District has cut several supplemental positions that will result in a $30,277 savings.
The board approved the cuts — which include department chairmanships and organization advisers — at a special meeting last week.
Among those eliminated are the art club, public relations, Spanish, French and Italian club positions. The public relations position was paid $1,537. The other three each were paid $1,358.
Superintendent John Sarandrea explained there are no clubs for those advisers this year because they were not active.
Department head positions eliminated are health and physical education, technology education, art, music, business education and family and consumer science, foreign language and learning support at $929 each. Instead, the district will keep one person who is department chairman of electives, at a pay of $929.
Eliminated were the class sponsors of grades seven through 11, which were paid $929 each per year.
Vocal music adviser for grades seven and eight, paid $1,358, was eliminated, as was the vocal music adviser for grades nine through 12, which was paid $1,787. Instead, a secondary vocal music teacher was assigned for grades seven to 12 at a pay of $1,787.
The yearbook adviser for grades seven through 12, paid $3,467.50, was eliminated.
Two instrumental music positions for grades seven and eight and grades nine through 12, paying $1,358 and $3,074, respectively, were eliminated. One secondary instrumental music position was created instead for all of those grades at a pay of $3,074.
One data team member was eliminated, reducing that staff from four to three at a savings of $1,412.
Also eliminated were the yearbook coordinator position at $2,216 and the public relations position for kindergarten through sixth grades, at $1,628.
The board members and superintendent commended business manager Joseph Ambrosini for finding ways to save the district money.
