NEW CASTLE — The Wilmington Area School Board plans to name a new superintendent at a special meeting Monday.

Board president Nancy Bretz said the meeting is set for 7 p.m. in the middle school library.

Superintendent Dr. C. Joyce Nicksick in September announced her plans to retire this month, and Friday was her last day in the schools after serving in her position since 2002. Jennifer Conrad, the district’s business manager, is acting superintendent until a new one is in place.

Also Monday, the board noted that a cooperative effort between the schools and the New Wilmington Borough Police Department to provide a school resource officer will not ouccur this school year but is a possibility for 2013-2014.

Kenneth C. Jewell, elementary principal, was working with the borough on applying for a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education to hire the officer.

However, Jewell reported that the borough could not hire an officer for the position before the grant application deadline.

The board members indicated they favor applying for next year if grant money is available. A resource officer works in the schools daily to provide security and crime prevention.

The board hired Michael Barringer of Youngstown as a temporary eighth-grade middle school science teacher, effective Nov. 19. They added the following persons to the substitute teacher list: Jennifer Black, Kara Kendall and Andre Wehner of New Wilmington, Beryl Joy Cookson of New Castle, Chelsea M. Litman of Hermitage and James B. Raubach of Grove City.

Resignations were accepted from elementary teacher Kimberly Ware effective Feb. 20 and custodian Dianne Adams effective Dec. 27.

Monday’s was the last meeting for board members Bretz and Dr. David Swerdlow who did not seek re-election.

Members Lynn Foltz and Autumn Miller will be sworn in for new four-year terms at the Dec. 5 reorganizational meeting as will newly elected members Joe Kollar and Jennifer Hunt.
