NEW CASTLE — Maintenance of the Stavich Bike Trail will be entrusted to a New Castle landscaping firm this year.

The commissioners Tuesday awarded a contract of $12,616 to Piatt’s Lawn Care and Landscaping of West Pittsburg Road to care for the section of trail that runs through Lawrence County.

The trail begins in Union Township, crosses through Mahoning Township and ends in Lowellville, Ohio.

Piatt’s was the lower of two bidders.

Amy McKinney, county planning director, told the commissioners the company has agreed to provide brushhogging, mowing and litter pickup throughout the trail. The firm’s owners are avid users of the trail, she said, and will take pride in keeping it maintained.

The commissioners also:

•Agreed to allow the planning department to assist Pulaski Township with updating its zoning ordinance. The township will pay the county up to $6,000 for its work.

•Presented a proclamation to representatives of the American Red Cross in observance of American Red Cross Month.

•Announced they will not have a meeting March 19. Their regular meetings this month will be March 12 and 26.
