Photo Gallery: Teams take turns pulling fire engine to raise money for county fire academy

NEW CASTLE — Years ago, firefighting equipment was pulled by horses.

Saturday night, though, various teams of humans decided to give it a try.

The goal was to pull a fire engine 37 feet down a closed-off East Washington Street. Trophies were given for best overall score, fastest pull and slowest pull.

The Underdogs claimed first place in the overall competition.

Teams needed to have at least four members, but also were allowed to have as many above that number as they liked. The winning score was determined by a formula that considered both the pull time and the combined weight of team members.

The entry fee was $10 per team member, and proceeds benefitted the Lawrence County Fire Academy.

The event was part of the Half Way to St. Patrick’s Day and Public Safety Appreciation Day sponored by Lanigan’s Irish Pub. In addition to the pumper pull competition, there were police K9 demonstrations and inside entertainment.
