County shares in veterans housing grant

NEW CASTLE — Lawrence County will share in an $842,000 grant to assist veterans and their families with housing.

Rep. Mike Kelly visited Lawrence County Community Action Partnership last week to congratulate the six western Pennsylvania counties that will benefit from the Supportive Services for Veterans Families Grant. It is funded by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and will assist former active duty veterans and family members with housing options.

The grant will be operational starting October 1 in  Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Clarion, Lawrence and Mercer counties.

This regional housing first model is designed to maximize limited funding by partnering with local Community Action Agencies to provide temporary financial assistance and case management to no fewer  than 100 veterans each year who are experiencing a housing crisis.

“There is a great need for a program such as this to help our veterans,” Kelly said during his visit. “I couldn’t imagine waking up each morning and having no place to go or call home.”

Veterans seeking to enroll in the program should call LCCAP at (724) 658-7258 to speak with a veteran housing advisor.
