Balloon Quest launches Thursday

NEW CASTLE — Lawrence County residents will be looking to the skies this week.

The annual Western Pennsylvania Balloon Quest begins Thursday and runs through Sunday at Scotland Meadows Park in Union Township.

The event, sponosored by the Union Township Volunteer Fire Department, will feature 20 hot air balloons, carnival rides, food concessions and bands.

Spectators will be permitted and encouraged to walk among the balloons.

 Balloon Quest hours are from 5 to 11 p.m. Thursday and Friday with a hot air balloon glow at 9 p.m. on Thursday. The balloons are scheduled to launch at 7 p.m. Friday, and at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, all weather permitting.

The Bryan Cole Show will perform on stage after the launch Saturday, and games are from 2 to 11 p.m.

Sunday’s launch is schedule for 7 a.m.

Wise Guyz Band will be on stage from 7 to 10:30 p.m., Sunday, and carnival rides, food and games will run from 2 to 11 p.m.

 Fireworks by Pyrotecnico will conclude most of the festivities at 10:30 p.m.

    An effort by local landowners to have forced pooling declared unconstitutional is getting some outside support. Two environmental groups — Delaware Riverkeeper Network and Mountain Watershed Association — have filed a friend of the court brief with Commonwealth Court. They are asking that the court review forced pooling, which is part of a 1961 Oil and Gas Conservation Law, before scheduled hearings take place.
