Program to spotlight forgotten women

NEW CASTLE — Forgotten women whose shaped Pennsylvania’s history will be featured this month by the Lawrence County Historical Society.

Retired teachers Jean Speight and Stephanie Fulena will highlight often-forgotten but historically significant women whose names were never known or vaguely mentioned but whose contributions, they say, are worth more than a footnote.

The free program will begin at 7 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Joseph A. Clavelli History Center, 408 N. Jefferson St.

The history of women, Speight said, is often a secondary one that centers on caring for those wounded in battle, serving at document signings, or standing at the side following election victories.  But women’s history includes radical concepts such as girls playing sports, women gaining the right to vote, serving as heads of state or making important discoveries.

She also noted that African-American women have a history of their own which reflects their concerns, values and roles as women and as African-Americans, but these historical concerns face women of all races, she said.

  • No tax hike in Union school budget

    The Union Area School Board has introduced a $10.6 budget with no tax increase. If the $10,585,494 spending plan is approved, it will be the third year without a tax increase in the district. The property tax is at 14.42 mills.

    New Castle’s Relay for Life will kick off at 7 p.m. May 31 on the track at Shenango High School’s Glen “Pop” Johnston Stadium. Relay for Life is an organized, overnight fundraising walk for the American Cancer Society.
