Parade to honor state champion ’Canes

NEW CASTLE — New Castle will have the opportunity to celebrate its championship basketball team once again this week.

The city and school district are co-hosting a downtown parade Thursday in honor of New Castle High’s Red Hurricane basketball team.

Led by coach Ralph Blundo, the team captured the 2014 PIAA Class AAAA state crown Saturday in Hershey with a win over La Salle College High School. The victory completed a perfect season for the Red Hurricane.

The parade will kick off at 6 p.m., forming along East Street, then turning right onto East Washington Street and ending at Kennedy Square.

Members of the Red Hurricane basketball team will be signing autographs as part of the celebration.

To accommodate the parade route, several downtown streets will be closed to traffic during the celebration. These are East Washington Street from Croton Avenue to Beaver Street; East and Mill streets at North Street; and Mercer, Jefferson and Beaver streets at the Washington Street intersections.
