The Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV has a new executive director.
At a special meeting Wednesday the unit’s board of directors hired Dr. Wayde Killmeyer by a 10-0 ballot vote. Members Merle Glass and Richard Sefton were absent.
Killmeyer was the superintendent of the Clairton School District in Allegheny County since July 2011.
His hiring as the intermediate unit director is contingent upon the negotiation and signing of a written employment agreement.
According to an IU IV spokeswoman, the board has not yet finalized all the terms of Killmeyer’s contract, including his salary and starting date. A special meeting will be held to complete the negotiations and signing.
Killmeyer, a resident of Clairton, holds a bachelor of science degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Pittsburgh. He holds master’s degrees in English literature from the University of Maryland and secondary math education from Slippery Rock University. He went on to obtain a doctorate in educational leadership from Duquesne University.
Before becoming superintendent at Clairton, Killmeyer was superintendent and junior-senior high principal at Avella Area School District in Washington County. He also had been a principal at Seton-LaSalle High School in Pittsburgh, vice principal at Oakland Catholic High School in Pittsburgh and assistant headmaster at Venango Catholic High School in Oil City.
Killmeyer also worked as a programmer and systems analyst in the computer industry and worked with the Space Physics Group at the University of Maryland, the Space Systems Division of General Electric Corp. and the Theoretical Support Group of the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the Bruceton Research Center in Bruceton, Pa.
Killmeyer will assume the position previously held by Cecelia H. Yauger, who resigned in April after her expenses on an Intermediate Unit-issued American Express credit card came into question. This was investigated earlier this year.
The board had commissioned the accounting firm Hill Barth & King to conduct a forensic audit of Yauger’s credit card records from 2007 through February of this year.
The audit showed more than $71,466 of Yauger’s charged expenses apparently were not for business reasons.
The firm is being paid a total of $17,763 for its research.
At a special meeting June 19, the board approved the audit report and voted to turn all of the findings of the investigation over to the Grove City police department.
So far, no criminal charges have been filed.
As a result of the credit card issue, the board has imposed a new whistleblower policy for the intermediate unit employees.
After Yauger’s resignation in April, former Intermediate Unit director Angelo Pezzuolo was appointed acting executive director during the search for a replacement. Pezzuolo held the position before Yauger.
At its special meeting Wednesday, the board also accepted the retirement of Robert Barber of New Castle, the unit’s director of business services, effective Oct. 31. The board is advertising for applications to fill the position.
The board also hired Brian Burick of New Castle as a part-time instructor in the Mercer County In-School Youth Program, effective Aug. 19 through June 30, 2014.
