Howard Hanna welcomes in holiday season with annual Chow Chow luncheon

NEW CASTLE — New Castle’s 2012 Chow Chow event continues to break records on behalf of children’s hospitals.

Diane Flamino, who has been a co-director along with Mary Ann Moats and Judy Fedor since 1998, said the money raised has increased every year.

“So many people mark their calendars and schedule the day off so they can come,” she said.

That was the case again yesterday at the New Englander Banquet Center, where more than 650 participated the buffet luncheon,  silent auction, Chinese auction and raffles.

The festive fund-raising event, held annually on the first Wednesday in December, is the unofficial kickoff to the holiday season for many in the area.

Laura Swisher, director of Annual Giving at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation, said the New Castle event has become a celebrated community occasion.

Samuel Angelucci, who served as the event’s master of ceremonies, said the Howard Hanna office in New Castle annually stages the top single-day Chow Chow event. The local office has helped the company raise more than $7.5 million through these events.

Many area restaurants and grocers donated food items for the event.

The event began in the local Howard Hanna office, but was moved to the more spacous New Englander 15 years ago.

Children’s Hospital offers the latest technology including a nursing workstation for every two patient rooms in addition to computer and communications equipment that enhance efficient communication within teams of caregivers.

In 2012, there were more than 1 million outpatient visits, 13,804 inpatient stays and 25,402 surgeries.
