Jobless rate improves in Lawrence County

NEW CASTLE — The unemployment rate in Lawrence County improved a bit in October, according to the latest statistics available.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry reported that the seasonally adjusted rate was 8.3 percent. September’s rate was 8.4 percent.

A year ago — October 2011 — the rate was 8.5 percent.

The rate in Pennsylvania for October was 8.1 percent and the U.S. rate was 7.9.

Surrounding counties had the following rates for October: Beaver, 7.5; Butler, 6.4; Mercer 8.2 and the Pittsburgh area, 7.3.
