Lawrence County Fair: Laurel, Mohawk students nab 4-H honor

NEW CASTLE — Casey Baker and Sarah Smith were named Outstanding 4-H Members.

Bryan Dickinson of the Lawrence County Cooperative Extension presented the awards at the Lawrence County Fair, stating the two “rose to the top” during the interview process for the award.

Baker, 16, of Harmony, is a Laurel High School student. A member of the 4-H Wayne Buckaroos Horse Club for eight years, she has held several offices in that club. She participated in the county council and 4-H Round-Up, attended the state 4-H leadership conference and a national 4-H conference and participated in various other 4-H activities. She also belongs to the Laurel Future Farmers of America, the school’s conservation club and is active in the youth group, basketball team and other volunteer activities at St. Gregory parish in Zelienople.

Baker has participated in Relay for Life and Project Giving Tree and has done volunteer work at a nursing home.

She is the daughter of Bruce and Cindy Baker.

Smith, 16, of New Galilee, is a student at Mohawk High School and has been in 4-H for seven years.

She is a member of the Teen Council, the Trail Blazers, the Neat Kids Goat Club and Digital Shooters Camera Club and has also been in 4-H textiles, gardening, crafts and cooking clubs.

Smith participated in the county council, the 4-H auction and 4-H Round-Up, attended a state 4-H leadership conference, 4-H State Achievement Days and took part in other 4-H activities.

She also belongs to the Enon Valley Community Historical Society, the Mohawk Spanish Club and FFA and the Butler-CTS IEA team.

Smith has volunteered for Enon Valley and Darlington community day celebrations and for the Storm Harbor Equestrian Center and Relay For Life.

She is the daughter of Debbie Smith.

The two girls will attend the national 4-H conference in Atlanta this fall.

The second annual Fallen Warrior Ride is scheduled to leave Cascade Park at 6 p.m. Aug. 15 for a one-hour, circuitous route to Laurel High School. Once there, riders — led by the Patriot Honor Guard of Western Pennsylvania — will parade into the Lawrence County Fairgrounds, where they’ll join a Salute to the American Soldiers: For God and Country, a crusade by Vision Ministries of Lawrence County.
