NEW CASTLE — Robert Razzano was hired last night as seventh- and eighth-grade principal for the New Castle Area School District.
At a special meeting, by a 5-2 vote with one abstention, the board approved a 12-month contract for Razzano and established a base salary at $109,020.
Voting for the hiring were board members Mary Ann Tofel, Anna Pascarella, Allan Joseph, Karen Humphrey and Stacey Fleo. Board member Mark Kirkwood and president David DiGiammarino opposed. Board member Barbara Razzano, Robert’s wife, abstained. Dr. Marilyn Berkely was absent.
The board abolished a 12-month, junior-senior high school assistant principal position, effective immediately, and by an 8-0 vote approved Carol Morell as assistant principal at the senior high level. She will remain a 195-day administrator.
Prior to the vote, Superintendent John J. Sarandrea made a presentation to the board, outlining duties and responsibilities of teachers and principals to meet upcoming educational requirements.
Following the meeting, Razzano, 52, said he has served in the district as an assistant principal for 14 years. Prior to that, he taught for four and one-half years in the alternative education program and as a social studies teacher.
