Man charged in double-fatal car accident

NEW CASTLE — A Mahoningtown man has been charged in the deaths of two people killed in a car accident late last month.

Pulaski Township police said Justin Stafford Stone Sr., 31, of 502 Eighth St. was driving under the influence when his vehicle collided with another car on Route 422 near the Ohio line.

Killed in the Nov. 30 collision was a passenger in Stone’s vehicle, Richard Kubik, 60, of Liberty Street. The driver of the other vehicle, Robert W. Bacon, 62 of Youngstown, also was killed in the head-on crash.

According to police, Stone was traveling east on Route 422 about 4:30 p.m. when his Chevrolet Lumina crossed the center line and hit Bacon’s Ford Ranger truck.

Both Bacon and Kubik were pronounced dead at the scene by Lawrence County Coroner Russell S. Noga. Stone was injured, police said, and taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown for treatment.

Because of the accident, traffic on Route 422 in the area was rerouted for about five hours.

Pulaski Township police contacted the Pennsylvania State Police to assist with reconstructing the accident. The results led to charges against Stone, who faces two counts each of homicide by vehicle while under the influence and aggravated assault by a vehicle while under the influence.

Stone also is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

Charges were filed in the office of District Judge Scott McGrath. A preliminary hearing has yet to be scheduled for Stone.
